Washington state laws for alcohol and marijuana-related driving offenses have changed the penalties for first-time offenders in several ways. If it is a first DUI offense within seven years of the alleged incident date, one could expect a minimum of one or two days in jail, approximately $900.00 to $1,200.00 minimum fine and costs, and usually 90 days to one-year license suspension. One may need obtain an Ignition Interlock drivers license during the time of suspension. An Ignition Interlock must also be installed for at least one year, (although vehicles owned by or operated for an employer may be exempted). High-risk insurance could be required for three years. Probation for up to five years would also be required along with comleting the recommended alcohol program. Further, if convicted of a DUI or Physical Control charge with on prior alcohol or marijuana DUI within seven years (even one that was previously reduced to Reckless Driving or Negligent Driving 1°), a minimum of 30 or 45 days in jail could be imposed, along with 60 to 90 days of home detention.
